Gregor Spence

EB bass

Gregor hails from Barnsley in Yorkshire and started playing Eb Bass at the age of ten with the Sellers Youth Band. He was also a member of the Elland Youth Band for several years, winning the Youth Nationals, Best Basses at the Action Medical Research Youth Championships, and 4 appearances at the European Youth Championships with a win in 2017. In 2016 Gregor joined the Skelmanthorpe Band who experienced great contest success at the time, winning the First Section of the Butlin’s Mineworkers Championships, consecutive podium places at the Yorkshire Regional Championships, with promotion to both the Championship Section and the Grand Shield.

In September 2018, Gregor moved to Cardiff to study at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama with Sean O’Neil, joining the Flowers Band in October 2018 after a brief stint with Tongwynlais Temperance. Gregor’s first contest with the band was Brass in Concert 2018, where the band was awarded the ‘Best basses’ prize.

Gregor was appointed as Band Manager in July 2022, which coincided with him beginning his studies for a Masters in Arts Management at the RWCMD, in which he achieved a Distinction. Gregor was the youngest person in the history of the band to be appointed to this position. In 2024 Gregor’s role morphed into “Development and Engagements Manager” to reflect the work in Fundraising, Audience Development, and booking Engagements that he undertakes. As a day job, Gregor works in Fundraising as Trusts and Foundations Manager for The Benedetti Foundation.

 

Tom grew up in Canterbury, Kent and began playing the cornet at the age of twelve. He started playing with Simon Langton Brass at age fifteen on Baritone before being promoted to Eb Bass the following year. In 2019, Tom began studying at Durham University and made the step up to the top section, joining the Easington Colliery Band. Tom quickly impressed and was soon playing solo Eb Bass with the band. Tom was a member of Easington during a particularly successful period. Highlights include winning the Bolsover Festival of Brass 2021 and 2nd place at the North of England Area 2022 which qualified the band for the National Finals at the Albert Hall, where Tom made his debut at the contest. In 2023, Tom was part of the team that won the ‘best basses’ prize at the North of England Area contest.

In late 2023, Tom moved to Bristol for work and made his contest debut with the Flowers Band at the National Finals in the same year, going on to enjoy a 3rd place at BiC 2023 and claiming victory at the 2024 West of England Regionals and French Open Championships. A great way to get started with the band!

Tony Pemberton

Tony, originally from Blackpool, Lancashire, began his musical journey at the age of 11, playing Eb Bass with the Poulton-le-Fylde Brass Band and the LYBB. At just 16, he embarked on an 18-year career as a professional musician in the Royal Artillery, honing his skills and performing at the highest level. During his military career, Tony contributed his talent to brass bands including Northfleet, Aveley & Newham, and Desford Colliery Band.

Retiring as Principal Tuba of the Royal Artillery Orchestra in 2009, Tony took a sabbatical from brass banding to pursue a career in IT. He later returned to the brass band world, briefly playing with the Wantage Band. In 2012, Tony joined the renowned Flowers Band as Principal Eb Bass before transitioning to Bb Bass in 2017, a move that reignited his passion for playing and brought fresh challenges to his musical career. In addition to his playing,

Tony has contributed to the band's success off-stage, serving as both Treasurer and Band Manager. With decades of experience and dedication to brass music, Tony remains a key part of the band’s success and spirit.

 

Ieuan was born in Swindon and started playing BBb Bass at the age of sixteen when he switched from tenor horn to help his band at the time Brunel Brass for the Second Section National finals. Ieuan was with Brunel from their formation in 2007 until April 2018 and experienced much success winning two lower section National Finals along the way.

He was also a member of The Band of The Prince of Wales' Division in the British Army before relocating to Tidworth to join the band there. During this time Ieuan was also the Principal BBb Bass of the British Army Brass Band. A particular highlight of his time with the Band so far was being a member of the section that won the prestigious ‘Best Basses Award’ at the Brass in Concert Championships, 2018.
